ComEd’s long running LED rebate program ended earlier this
year on January 5, 2015. ComEd had been paying general contractors and
electricians rebates for the more expensive LED bulbs, making them a great choice
for many residential and commercial installations. While the LED bulbs are
still far more efficient than many other types of bulbs, since the end of the
rebate their prices have skyrocketed.
The increase in the cost of bulbs has two major effects.
One, it makes it more difficult for many businesses to justify the increased
upfront cost. Businesses paying the full price of the LED bulbs may not wish to
spend tight cash flow on more expensive bulbs, even if those bulbs produce cost
savings over time. Contractors may be hesitant to recommend products that will
increase the cost of their bids and are not willing to absorb the extra cost of
the bulbs as an expanse.
The second effect of increased LED bulb prices is that the
cost savings associated with their smaller energy footprint is smaller. The
smaller the cost savings the less incentive there is to use the LED bulbs.
It is unclear if the rebate program will ever return or what
the price of LED bulbs will do in the long term.
