How to Install Trim Rings on Recessed Lights

Installing trim rings on commercial electric recessed lights is an easy project you can complete by yourself as long as follow a few safety instructions.

Before doing any electrical work make sure the power to the light is off. Check the main breaker and make sure the power is off to the room you are working in.

You may need an additional light source to allow you to see clearly while working with the power off in any given room.

Make sure there is no light bulb installed in the housing / New Construction Can. There should also be a socket plate in the can.

The plate will have a wing nut that allow the plate to move up and down to accommodate different lengths of light bulbs.

Most trim rings have three parts: the outer ring, inner baffle, and mount springs.

Place the rings on top of the housing and attach the rings with the mount springs to the socket plate. There should be two holes in the socket plate that the springs will easily hook into.

Next all you need to do screw in a light bulb. If you want the light bulb to set further up into the ceiling, simple remove the light bulb and the rings and use the wing nut to adjust the socket plate to your desired distance.

How to Fix a Broken Light Switch

Many basic home electric repairs can be done on your own without needing to call a local electrician. If you follow the correct safety precautions, you can easily fix a broken light switch.

Before tearing apart your light switch, always make sure to test the obvious problems. Make sure the room has power and other lights or outlets in the room have power. Also, make sure the light bulbs don’t need replaced. If all of these check out, then it’s time to take a look at the light switch.

Before doing any work on the switch be sure to turn off power to the room at your main breaker box.

Unscrew and remove the plate cover..

Once the plate is off you should see a few screws holding the switch into the electrical box. You will want to unscrew these so that the switch is only being held in place by the wires.

Check the connections. Sometimes the wires can become lose and this will break the circuit, keeping the light switch form working right.

If none of the connections seem loose, you may need to replace the switch. You can remove the wires by loosening the clamps or screws holding the wires in. Then the switch can easily be removed. Make sure you identify and mark the “hot-red” wires and the "neutral-black" colored wires.

When installing a new switch make sure to mount it in the correct orientation, with the “on” and “off” in the right places. Wrap the wires with electrical tape to insulate you from electric shock before connecting anything.

Connect the wires to the switch by wrapping them around the screws or placing them into the clamps. Be careful to put the wires back in the correct place. You should have already marked the “hot” wires and the neutral wires. The clamp that is holding the wire in place and the outlet then needs to be wrapped with electrical tape. Electrical tape is very important because it acts as an insulator and protects you from electrical shock. If you have any uncertainty contact a professional electrician before proceeding.

Next attach the switch to the electrical box and replace the plate cover.

Before testing the switch, don’t forget to restore power to the room.

If you continue to have problems after replacing the switch you may need the help of a professional local electrician.

Qualities of a Good Electrical Contractor in Chicago

There are several instances when you need the services of an electrical contractor that can do repairs, or install new electrical appliances and fixtures at home or in the workplace. Whatever the reason might be, you need to get one that provides good services. The contractor must be able to carry out the job without any difficulties.

Finding the right licensed electrician is a tedious task. It is because there are a multitude of electricians in Highland Park, Northbrook, Glenview, Deerfield, Northfield, Barrington, Arlington Heights, Wheeling, Buffalo Grove, Niles, and Wilmette. That’s why it is important to be careful in choosing the right contractor for your electrical work. Below are some of the qualities you need to consider, in order to hire the right person for the job.

Electrical Contractor with the Right Tools

A good electrical contractor possesses the right tools needed to do electrical work. If you are not familiar with the tools, you can ask help from your family and friends. You can also go online to research about the tools. Lacking the right tools means the person is not a professional. It is a clear sign that the contractor is not serious about the job. You should immediately look for another. This is the case for a general contractor who knows how to do the job, but lacks the tools required for electrical work.

Look for a Licensed Electrician

Whether you are looking for someone to do electrical maintenance or installation of new electrical network, you need to get someone who is licensed. Only those with proper accreditations can get a license to be a contractor in Chicago. You should check for one’s license first before allowing the person to work on your lighting or any other electrical construction.

If the contractor doesn’t have a license, then don’t hire them. It is important to check the license first to ensure that they are qualified for the job. Electricity is dangerous, and it is important to make sure that the person you hire for the job knows what he or she is doing.

Look for References

The best way to find the right electrical contractor in Chicago is to check their previous jobs. Check whether one has experience in green building. Ask previous clients whether their homes or offices have efficient energy use. If the work done in the past is high quality, it is more likely that you will get top-notch service as well.

For the best electrical contractor in Chicago, be sure to consider Soyfer Electric. They specialize in both residential and commercial electrical services. They are bonded, licensed, and insured in Chicago. They have the experience when it comes to creating energy efficient networks. The best thing about the contractor is that they provide high quality services at competitive rates.  Soyfer Electric has been in business since 1995.

Handling Broken or Dead Outlets

If one of your outlets suddenly stops working, the natural reaction is to assume the worst and get ready to spend a lot of money. However, most of the time broken or dead outlets can be fixed easily and cheaply.

Diagnose the Problem

Check the easy things first. See if other outlets in the room have power. Make sure the circuit breaker isn’t tripped. Check to see if any GFI switches have been tripped. Once you have eliminated all the easy problems, you can look into more complicated issues.

The next step will involve taking the outlet apart. Before touching the outlet, turn off the main power to that outlet from the circuit breaker. Unscrew the faceplate and pull out the electric box. Look for loose connections or melted or frayed wires. If everything looks good, you will need to test the
circuit.

Testing the Circuit

When you test the circuit you will need to turn the power on to the outlet. It is also vital that you know which of the wires are “hot” wires that carry electricity and will shock you if not handled correctly, and neutral wires. A simple amp meter that you can buy at the hardware store will tell you of the outlet is getting electricity or not.

If the outlet is not getting electricity you may need professional help to resolve the issue.
