Safety and Electricity Go Hand in Hand

Everyone knows men love their toys and putting on that tool belt and tackling a small job around the house can be fun.  It can also be dangerous, as many have found out the hard way.  For instance, if you are working with electricity don't take any chances.  Over 1,000 people die from electrocution each year in the United States.  Short of dying, there are other painful injuries which occur such as getting metal in your eyes from not wearing safety glasses.  Another handyman received third degree burns from touching a hot drill bit.  Not using a voltage meter to check if a line is hot and getting shocked is not uncommon.  Using non-insulated screwdriver is a definite no-no.

In order to avoid these types of home injuries there is a simple list one can follow prior to starting any home job.

  1. Always make sure you are wearing proper equipment from the bottom of your shoes to the top of your head.
  2. Analyze what the job is and what the best strategy is for getting the job done in the safest way possible.
  3. Make sure you have a voltage meter and use it wherever contact is to be made.
  4. Make sure to use proper tools for each task.

Being safe isn't something that happens by accident.  It takes thought and preparation.  Enjoy doing the task and don't become a statistic.  If there is any doubt hire a professional for the job, it will be cheaper and safer in the end.
