How to Install Trim Rings on Recessed Lights

Installing trim rings on commercial electric recessed lights is an easy project you can complete by yourself as long as follow a few safety instructions.

Before doing any electrical work make sure the power to the light is off. Check the main breaker and make sure the power is off to the room you are working in.

You may need an additional light source to allow you to see clearly while working with the power off in any given room.

Make sure there is no light bulb installed in the housing / New Construction Can. There should also be a socket plate in the can.

The plate will have a wing nut that allow the plate to move up and down to accommodate different lengths of light bulbs.

Most trim rings have three parts: the outer ring, inner baffle, and mount springs.

Place the rings on top of the housing and attach the rings with the mount springs to the socket plate. There should be two holes in the socket plate that the springs will easily hook into.

Next all you need to do screw in a light bulb. If you want the light bulb to set further up into the ceiling, simple remove the light bulb and the rings and use the wing nut to adjust the socket plate to your desired distance.
